This workshop helps your interviewers and hiring managers define their hiring criteria, interview effectively, sell, and make the right hiring decisions for your company.

Hiring Manager Interviewing Training

You could easily build a 1 hour legal basics, behavioral interviewing lunch-and-learn for your hiring managers.  But you want something more. You want to raise the bar on candidate quality, by raising the bar on your interviewing process. Our custom-built workshop – called Predicting Success – delivers practical strategies, guides and techniques to help hiring managers and interviewers phone screen, interview, select, and sell the candidates that will succeed in your company. It’s called Predicting Success because that’s the purpose of an interview – to predict whether or not this candidate will be successful here.

Success is a well-defined hiring bar, aligned hiring teams, skilled interviewers, an effective, inclusive process and candidate experience, and confident, quality hiring decisions.

I need more than basic behavioral interviewing 101. What do I get?

 Defined Hiring Standards

Our 6-8 hour onsite workshop focuses on the skills and tools your team needs to define their hiring criteria, and then interview in a way that gathers evidence of performance, attracts and hires diverse talent, and makes hiring decision tradeoffs that align to your hiring principles.

 Better Process

We consult with you early on, leading focus group conversation across exec, recruiting, HR and hiring teams, so that we can custom-build what you need; you guide us as we build the training agenda.

Customized Training

We consult with you early on, leading focus group conversation across exec, recruiting, HR and hiring teams, so that we can custom-build what you need; you guide us as we co-build the training agenda.  We directly address your biggest challenges, and ensure the training is branded and delivered in a way that maps to your culture and existing people programs.

 Aligned Teams

Our focus is on training - but just as importantly, it's on driving alignment with your hiring teams. When your interviewers, hiring managers and recruiters are aligned on your hiring principles, your hiring bar and competencies (aka "what good looks like"), your approach to diversity, and your process, you get high-bar hiring, at scale.

 Interview Guides

Your interviewers will receive practical tools and guides designed to help them in their next interview. These are not 12 page forms – these are short, smart, editable guides designed to reinforce the methodology shared in the workshop.

 Credibly Delivered

Our training programs are credibly delivered by former corporate Recruiting Leaders, not generic trainers. We have experience as recruiters, as trainers, as hiring managers and HR professionals who understand how to engage smart hiring teams in training, and ensure what we deliver is actionable and tailored to their needs.

 Making it Stick

After the training has been delivered, we work closely with the HR/recruiting leadership team to recommend changes to ensure the best practices stick.  How do we get recruiters and hiring managers to use these new competencies, how do we deploy the interview guides, how do we drive adoption of these new processes?  We can help

 Train-the-Trainer

We want to create client independence, not dependence.  So, we build out a trainer’s guide and lead a train-the-trainer session to build your team’s capabilities to redeliver this program across your organization for years to come.

 Talent Advisor Recruiter Training

About ½ of our predicting success clients hire us to deliver a custom Talent Advisor workshop for their recruiters, to teach them how to drive accountability and lead the interviewing process post-training, so that the lessons learned become the norm.  Learn more here.

Built for your real world

All of our training is custom-built to align to your team’s challenges, goals, skill gaps,
culture, and process. The actual workshop agenda is developed in partnership with
you, the recruiting leader. We leverage real world interviewing scenarios to ensure that hiring managers and interviewers leave with practical, actionable strategies and tactics. We build these scenarios after conducting focus group calls with your team, so that we’re sure
they’re on target.

It’s practical

We understand that interviewers and hiring managers have a low tolerance for training, especially HR training, that isn’t practical and easy to use. Our training doesn’t spend an
hour telling them “why” selecting the right people is so important; they know that. It
focuses on the “how” and is loaded with one- and two-page guides and templates to make interviewing and selecting the right people for your company, easy.

It’s customized to your hiring criteria and recruiting culture

We customize the training ahead of time to focus in on your competencies (“culture fit”) by leveraging your insights into why people succeed, why people struggle, why people quit, and why people are declined after phone screens and interviews. We include simple handouts that help establish the “answers” we’re listening for, so that we leave with common, better-defined hiring standards.

We teach a methodology that works

We don’t simply share a book full of our favorite interview questions. We teach attendees
how to build their own evidence-oriented questions, evaluate candidates by leveraging a methodology that’s easy to remember and use, and moves them away from unreliable gut feelings, unsubstantiated biases, and canned questions.

We consult with you early on, leading focus group conversation across exec, recruiting, HR and hiring teams, so that we can custom-build what you need; you guide us as we build the training agenda.  Our 6-8 hour onsite workshop focuses on the skills and tools your team needs to define their hiring criteria, and then interview in a way that gathers evidence of performance, attracts and hires diverse talent, and makes hiring decision tradeoffs that align to your hiring principles.

Our focus is on training, sure – but almost more importantly, it’s on driving alignment with your hiring teams. When your interviewers, hiring managers, and recruiters are aligned on your hiring principles, your hiring bar and competencies (aka “what good looks like”), your approach to diversity, and your process, you get high-bar hiring, at scale.

We build interview guides and teach a methodology that goes beyond behavioral interviewing 101, because we know your hiring managers are smart, and often not very tolerant of basic training. Our workshops are credibly led by former, successful corporate recruiting leaders who now consult with many of the top hiring teams in the world, and bring fundamental and advanced best practices to your busy hiring teams.

Exercises?  Of course.  We build in opportunities for interviewers to build real questions and good answer themes for soft skill and technical hiring criteria, to practice interviewing and digging for evidence, to define a great candidate experience, and to apply your hiring principles to imperfect candidates.  Participants get to practice what they’re learning, while they’re learning.

Post-training help?  Yes, your interviewers will receive practical tools and guides designed to help them in their next interview.  These are not 12 page forms – these are short, smart, editable guides designed to reinforce the methodology shared in the workshop.  Additionally, we work closely with the HR/recruiting leadership team to recommend post-workshop process changes, including helping recruiters partner better with hiring managers to set up the right interviewing process, select the right interviewers, facilitate the right hiring decisions, and leverage the right techniques to evaluate and sell top talent – this is part of our “making it stick” process.  Most of our clients also want a train-the-trainer session, so that they can deliver more sessions with their own internal trainers.  And about ½ hire us to deliver a custom Talent Advisor workshop for their recruiters, to teach them how to drive accountability and lead the interviewing process post-training, so that the lessons learned become the norm.

We’re all about helping you make this more than just a training event…we want this to be part of your overall strategy to raise the bar on the talent you hire, raise the bar on hiring team effectiveness, and raise the bar on candidate experience.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

  • New and Experienced Hiring Managers
  • New and Experienced Interviewers
  • New and Experienced Recruiters

We conduct focus group calls with your recruiting team, interviewers, hiring managers, and recent hires before we design your training. This helps us to customize the content by learning more about the skill level of the people who will attend and also learning to speak your “language.” It also helps your team get comfortable with us, our approach, and our expertise.

We can build custom versions just for engineering, sales, management roles, corporate teams, and more, so that you can invite people to attend as intact teams and/or go deeper into examples for specific job families.

WHO DELIVERS THE WORKSHOP?

Our workshop facilitators are former corporate recruiting leaders who have built and deployed interview training in the real world environments of busy, cynical hiring managers, unique cultures - where fit matters - and big growth.

We know how to help companies - from retailers to bio-tech to technology leaders - define their hiring bar and philosophy, and then build a custom workshop that delivers just what their hiring teams need.

For larger companies, we typically train up the first 40-100 people, and then build and deliver a train-the-trainer program, so that your internal teams can deliver the training and scale up the rollout. Companies like PepsiCo, Yahoo!, Booking and Starbucks leverage their internal trainers or recruiting leaders to deliver the workshops now.

We also offer scalable, online video-based training (delivered by John Vlastelica, creator of Predicting Success), with 100+ 3-5 minute episodes covering all things interviewing, complete with quizzes and completion measurement tools. Learn more about our online training.

John Vlastelica, our founder and the creator of Predicting Success, built Amazon's interview training program and co-built and co-led their Bar Raisers program with executive leaders.

DO WE GET TOOLS AND TEMPLATES?

Yes! We share templates that make defining your hiring criteria, phone screening, interviewing, and deciding easier.

  • Customizable Job Spec and Interviewing Process Prep Guide
  • Phone Screen Guide
  • Interviewing Guide
  • Reference Check Guide
  • Feedback and Decision Making Guide
  • Interviewing Focus Area Assignment Grid
  • Customized Competency Based Question/Answer Guides

We include tools/templates with every workshop we deliver. These are designed to help the training “live on” after the workshop is over. We’re happy to incorporate your existing tools/templates with this training, too, as it can help you to drive adoption and make the workshop feel more integrated with your existing process.

After the training, hiring managers and interviewers head back to their desks with easy-to-use 1-2 page guides to help them screen and interview candidates. This is not some theoretical workshop focused on the importance of interviewing top talent well; it’s all about the “how to.”

To be honest, if you're seeking an inexpensive 1 - 2 hour lunch and learn overview on basic behavioural interviewing techniques, we're probably not a good match, as you can find free resources online or hire an HR Generalist or general trainer to deliver a quick overview program the teaches people to ask "tell me about a time" questions.

The Predicting Success program leverages behavioural interviewing, for sure, but goes well beyond that to deliver an evidence based interviewing methodology and tools that teach people how to hire against the skills, attributes/competencies. experience and track record, and motivators needed to be a success at YOUR company - not just general one on one interviewing techniques/questions, but a program that's custom built around your hiring bar and criteria, arm your interviewers with questions and answers to help them evaluate past and present performance as well as fit within your culture, and give you an interviewing process that not only leads to the right tradeoffs/decisions, but creates a great candidate experience, as well.

We’re typically hired by Clevel execs at startups and recruiting and HR directors/VPs at medium and larger sized companies. We’ve worked with diverse clients across geographies and industries, from giant high tech companies to national retailers to local school districts. Our clients typically share one thing in common: they want to improve the way their hiring teams interview and select talent, and need a partner who gets them, and won’t just offer the generic, off the shelf behavioral interviewing training that so many companies offer – they need a partner who will help them improve their interviewing process, build custom interviewing guides to help them hire the talent that’s right for their culture and roles, and deliver it in a way that energizes – sometimes skeptical – hiring managers and interviewers to actually use the methodology and tools needed to hire top talent.

Since 2002, thousands of hiring managers from clients such as EA Games, Yahoo!, PepsiCo, Booking, Amazon, Target.com, Zumiez, Pokemon, Starbucks, Juno Therapeutics and Dolby Labs have raved about our custom-built interviewing workshops.

Yes, many companies – with their own learning and development or recruiting/HR teams – hire us to build the training, deliver a few pilots, and then train up their internal (or external) trainers to deploy the workshop to their offices. As former practitioners, we partner well with key stakeholders across your organization to ensure the trainer’s program and trainer’s guide work for your trainers.

Our team is based across the U.S., and we deliver most of our training onsite with clients, in their training rooms. We can also deliver training via webinars. And some of our clients have hired us to train their internal trainers and/or help them build online versions, so that they can leverage the training without the travel costs and fees associated with traditional classroom training. We typically complete the focus group and discovery work virtually, which allows us to start the project faster and keep travel costs to a minimum.
